Psyllium Husk in Urdu (اسپغول کا چھلکا): What It Is and How to Use It

Short answer: psyllium husk, known in Urdu as اسپغول کا چھلکا (ispaghol, also written isabgol), is the thin outer husk of the seeds of Plantago ovata. It is almost entirely fibre, most of it soluble. It absorbs water and forms a gel, which is why it helps keep digestion regular. Always take it with a full glass of water.

Psyllium husk in Urdu:

What psyllium husk is

Plantago ovata is a small plant grown mainly in India and Pakistan. Its seeds are covered in a thin, pale husk, and that husk is what is sold as ispaghol. Stirred into water it swells to many times its size and turns into a soft gel. It has almost no taste of its own, which is why it mixes easily into water, milk, yoghurt or dough.

What it does

Keeps digestion regular

Psyllium is a bulk-forming fibre. It holds water in the gut, which softens hard stools and firms loose ones, so it helps in both directions. That’s why ispaghol has been a household remedy in Pakistan for generations, taken with water or warm milk for constipation and with dahi when the stomach is upset.

Helps maintain normal cholesterol

This is the best-established benefit. In the United States, the Food and Drug Administration accepts that soluble fibre from psyllium husk, about 7 g a day as part of a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol, lowers blood cholesterol. The gel binds bile acids in the gut, and the body uses cholesterol to replace them.

Slows the rise in blood sugar after a meal

Taken with a meal, the gel slows how quickly carbohydrate is absorbed, so blood sugar rises more gently. It is not a treatment for diabetes. If you take diabetes medicine, talk to your doctor before making it a daily habit.

Makes a meal more filling

Because it swells, psyllium adds volume without calories, and many people find a meal with it keeps them full for longer.

How to take it

  • Start small: one level teaspoon a day, then build up to one or two tablespoons over a week or two if you need to. Starting with a lot at once causes wind and bloating.
  • Always with plenty of water: stir it into a full glass (about 250 ml) of water, milk or juice and drink it straight away, before it thickens, then drink another glass. Never swallow the dry husk on its own.
  • In food: stir it into yoghurt or oats, or add a spoonful to roti or bread dough.
  • Keep it apart from medicines: take psyllium at least two hours before or after any medicine, because it can slow how well the medicine is absorbed.

Who should check with a doctor first

People who have difficulty swallowing, a narrowing or blockage of the bowel, or ongoing stomach pain, and anyone taking regular medication (especially for diabetes), should ask their doctor before using psyllium every day. Stop and get help if you feel chest pain, choking or vomiting after taking it.
